Navigating Work and Family Life, Authentically
Featuring Heather Redisch
As a successful entrepreneur and mother of three girls, Heather Reddish had a lot of wisdom to share about work-life integration. Here are some key takeaways from my interview with her that I think we can all learn from:
Don’t be afraid to create your own path.
If you’re not finding the flexibility or support you need in your current job, it’s okay to strike out on your own. As Heather discovered with The Talent Maven, starting your own company can give you more control over your work-life integration and open up new opportunities you may have never thought possible.
2. Embrace the similarities between parenting and entrepreneurship.
If you’re a mother and an entrepreneur, you already know how similar these two roles can be. Both require multitasking, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills - qualities that many women possess in spades. By leveraging these skills and being transparent with your children about your struggles and successes, you can set a positive example for them to follow in their own lives.
3. Challenge stereotypes about working mothers.
Unfortunately, there are still many misconceptions about working mothers - namely, that they’re not as committed or trustworthy as their male counterparts. However, as Heather points out, these stereotypes couldn’t be further from the truth. Working mothers are skilled at juggling multiple responsibilities, modeling work-life integration for everyone around them, and bringing empathy and understanding to their work.
4. Look for companies that value empathy, respect, and integrity.
If you’re looking for a new job or considering which companies to partner with as an entrepreneur, pay close attention to how they treat their employees. Companies that prioritize empathy, respect, and integrity are generally more successful because they foster trust and loyalty among their workers. In particular look for managers who are understanding of dual-working moms who need flexibility to balance both work and family commitments.
5. Prioritize work-life integration over balance.
Finally, when it comes to your own work-life integration, prioritize integration over balance. As Heather points out, our professional and personal lives are intricately interconnected, and we must find ways to blend them successfully rather than trying to compartmentalize them. That being said, be sure to set boundaries and create routines that work for you and your family so you do not neglect either aspect of your life.
I hope these key takeaways from Heather interview help inspire you to pursue your passions and embrace a life that’s proud, purposeful, and unapologetic. Remember: with the right mindset and habits in place, you can integrate motherhood and entrepreneurship in a way that truly works for you.
Until next time, live boldly, showcase your brilliance, and be a badass.
